A DERMATOLOGIST’S GUIDE TO ACHIEVING SMOOTHER SKIN WITH ADVANCED LASER TECHNOLOGY
Every month, I meet patients who have spent years managing unwanted hair through waxing, threading, shaving, and temporary solutions. Many of them come with the same questions:
“Is laser hair reduction safe for Indian skin?”
“Will it hurt?”
“How many sessions will I need?”
“Is the result permanent?”
After more than 25 years of practicing dermatology and treating different Indian skin types, I understand these concerns. Laser hair reduction has evolved significantly over the years, and with the right technology, correct settings and expert supervision, it can be a safe and effective solution for long-term hair reduction.
This guide explains everything you need to know about laser hair reduction in Mumbai: how it works, who it is suitable for, the expected number of sessions, cost, preparation, and aftercare.

What Is Triple Wavelength Diode Laser Hair Reduction?
Laser hair reduction is a medical procedure that uses controlled laser energy to target hair follicles beneath the
skin.
At Myskin Clinic, we use triple-wavelength diode laser technology, which combines three different wavelengths:
755nm wavelength: Targets finer and more superficial hair.
808nm wavelength: The most commonly used wavelength, effective for a wide range of hair types.
1064nm wavelength: Reaches deeper hair follicles while being safer for darker skin tones because it has less absorption by skin pigment.
The laser energy is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and converted into heat. This damages the follicle’s ability to produce new hair while keeping the surrounding skin protected.
Unlike older laser systems that worked best only on certain skin and hair types, triple wavelength technology
allows us to treat a wider variety of Indian skin tones and hair textures more safely.

Is Laser Hair Reduction Safe for Indian Skin?
This is one of the most common questions I receive from my patients.
The answer is yes, laser hair reduction is safe for Indian skin when performed with the right technology and by an experienced dermatologist.
Indian skin usually contains higher amounts of melanin (skin pigment). This means laser settings need to be carefully selected to avoid unnecessary heat absorption by the skin.
Skin types are often classified using the Fitzpatrick Skin Scale, which ranges from very fair skin to deeper skin tones.
Most Indian patients fall under Fitzpatrick skin types III, IV, and V, which generally refer to:
Medium to wheatish skin tones
Brown skin tones
Dark brown skin tones
For these skin types, choosing the correct wavelength, energy levels, and cooling system is extremely important.
The 1064nm wavelength in triple wavelength diode lasers helps safely reach deeper hair follicles while reducing the risk of affecting the skin surface, making it suitable for many Indian skin types.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Reduction?
Laser hair reduction works best when the hair contains enough pigment for the laser to target.
You may be a good candidate if you:
✓ Have dark brown or black hair
✓ Experience frequent ingrown hairs
✓ Have irritation or pigmentation caused by waxing or shaving
✓ Want a long-term reduction in unwanted facial or body hair
✓ Have PCOS-related facial or body hair (after appropriate hormonal evaluation)
Laser may be less effective for:
Very light blonde hair
Grey or white hair, as these have little pigment for the laser to target
You should also inform your dermatologist if you are:
Pregnant or breastfeeding
Taking photosensitizing medications
Using systemic isotretinoin
Having active skin infections
Recently exposed to strong sunlight or tanning

How Does Laser Hair Reduction Work?
Every treatment plan begins with a detailed consultation. I evaluate your:
Skin type
Hair thickness and growth pattern
Medical history
Hormonal factors (if required)
Treatment expectations
Based on this assessment, laser settings are customised specifically for your skin and hair type.
Before Your Session
For best results:
Avoid waxing, threading, or plucking for 4–6 weeks before treatment.
Shaving is allowed because the hair follicle needs to remain intact.
Avoid excessive sun exposure before your appointment.
During Your Session
On the day of treatment:
1. The treatment area is cleaned and shaved if required.
2. Cooling gel is applied for comfort.
3. The laser handpiece is moved systematically across the area.
Most patients describe the sensation as a mild warm feeling or a small snapping sensation similar to a rubber band. The built-in cooling technology helps keep the procedure comfortable.
After Your Session
It is normal to experience:
Mild redness
Slight swelling around hair follicles
These usually settle within a few hours.
You can return to your routine immediately after treatment while following the recommended aftercare.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
How Many Laser Hair Reduction Sessions Are Required?
Laser works only on hair follicles that are actively growing during the treatment phase. Since not all hair follicles are active at the same time, multiple sessions are required.
The number of sessions varies depending on:
Treatment area
Hair thickness
Hormonal factors
Skin type
Individual response
Average requirements:
TREATMENT AREA | APPROXIMATE SESSIONS |
Underarms | 6–8 sessions |
Bikini Line | 6–8 sessions |
Full Legs | 8–10 sessions |
Back or Chest | 6–10 sessions |
Face (Upper Lip, Chin, Jawline) | 8–12 sessions |
Patients with hormonal conditions such as PCOS may require additional sessions or periodic maintenance because hormonal changes can stimulate new hair growth.

Laser Hair Reduction Cost in Mumbai
The cost of laser hair reduction depends on:
The treatment area
Hair density
Number of sessions required
Individual treatment plan
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Results: What Can You Expect?
Most patients experience a significant reduction in hair growth after completing their recommended sessions.
Typically, patients can expect:
70-90% reduction in hair growth
Finer and softer regrowth
Reduced dependence on waxing, threading, and shaving
It is important to understand that the medically correct term is long-term hair reduction, not permanent hair removal.
Hormonal changes, ageing, or certain medical conditions can activate dormant follicles over time. Some patients may benefit from maintenance sessions once or twice a year.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aftercare Following Laser Hair Reduction
To protect your skin after treatment:
✓ Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher regularly
✓ Avoid tanning and direct sun exposure
✓ Avoid steam rooms, saunas, and intense workouts for 24–48 hours
✓ Avoid harsh exfoliants and retinoids for 3–5 days
✓ Do not wax, thread, or pluck between sessions
✓ Shaving is safe if required
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Can Laser Hair Reduction Help With PCOS Hair Growth?
Yes, laser hair reduction can help manage unwanted facial and body hair associated with PCOS. However, since PCOS is a hormonal condition, it may continue to influence hair growth.
In such cases, I recommend evaluating the hormonal cause and creating a treatment plan that combines laser hair reduction with appropriate medical guidance.
