PRP & GFC Hair Treatment in Mumbai: Does It Really Work?

Almost every week, a patient sits across from me and asks the same thing: "I've tried every oil and shampoo. Will PRP actually help?"

After 25+ years of treating hair loss in Kandivali, my answer is always the same: it depends on the cause of your hair loss and how early you start treatment.

Hair loss isn't the same for everyone. Some people lose hair because of genetics, while others experience it due to hormonal changes, nutritional deficiencies, stress, or medical conditions. Before recommending PRP hair treatment or GFC hair treatment, I first need to understand why you're losing hair.

This guide explains what PRP and GFC treatments are, who they help, what results you can realistically expect, and what neither treatment can promise. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

What Is PRP (and GFC) Hair Treatment?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) is a hair restoration treatment that uses your body's own healing cells to stimulate weakened hair follicles.

I draw a small sample of your blood, spin it in a centrifuge, and separate the platelet-rich plasma, which contains a high concentration of growth factors. Growth factors are naturally occurring proteins that help repair tissues, support healing, and encourage healthy cell growth.

When this concentrate is injected into your scalp, these growth factors can improve blood supply to the hair follicles, which are the tiny structures beneath your skin where each strand of hair grows. They also help reduce inflammation and encourage the follicles to remain longer in the anagen phase, which is the active stage of the hair growth cycle when hair continues to grow.

GFC (Growth Factor Concentrate) works on a similar principle but uses a specialized kit to isolate a more purified and standardized concentration of growth factors from the same blood sample. Many of my patients also find GFC slightly more comfortable during the injection process.

Both treatments work by supporting hair follicles that are weakened but still alive. Neither PRP nor GFC can create new hair follicles where they no longer exist.

Who Should Consider PRP or GFC?

Hair loss is rarely a condition by itself. More often, it's a symptom of an underlying issue such as genetic pattern hair loss, PCOS/PMOS, thyroid imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, stress, or alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that causes round patches of hair loss. That's why I examine the scalp carefully and order blood tests when needed before recommending PRP or GFC hair treatment.

I typically recommend PRP or GFC for:

  • Early to moderate male or female pattern hair thinning

  • Patients wanting to slow early-stage hair shedding

  • Strengthening existing hair after a hair transplant

I ask patients to consult me first if:

  • There's a widening parting, receding hairline or round bald patches

  • Hair shedding is sudden and excessive, or the scalp is itchy or scaly

  • Baldness is already extensive, as PRP cannot regrow hair where no living follicles remain

------------------------------------------------------------------------- What to Expect During a PRP and GFC Hair Treatment

A successful PRP or GFC hair treatment begins with identifying the underlying cause of hair loss rather than simply treating the symptoms. A thorough assessment helps determine whether these treatments are appropriate and which option is likely to deliver the best results.

  1. Assessment: The scalp is examined, along with the pattern of hair loss and medical history. Blood tests may also be recommended if an underlying condition, such as thyroid dysfunction or iron deficiency, is suspected.

  2. Treatment Selection: Based on the findings, either PRP or GFC is recommended. The choice depends on the individual's scalp condition, stage of hair loss, and treatment goals rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

  3. Blood Draw: A small sample of blood is collected from the arm, similar to a routine blood test.

  4. Preparation: The blood is processed to prepare either Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) or Growth Factor Concentrate (GFC), depending on the selected treatment.

  5. Numbing and Injection: A numbing spray or local anesthetic is applied to the scalp before the prepared concentrate is carefully injected into areas experiencing hair thinning.

  6. Aftercare: Patients are typically advised not to wash their hair for 24 hours and to continue any prescribed medications, nutritional supplements, or dietary recommendations as part of their overall hair restoration plan.

Most treatment plans begin with three sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by a reassessment of progress. Depending on the individual's response, maintenance sessions may be recommended every six to twelve months to help sustain results.

Results and What to Expect

I always tell my patients that PRP and GFC are supportive treatments, not miracle cures or overnight fixes. Most patients notice reduced hair fall within six to eight weeks, while visible improvement in hair thickness and density usually appears three to six months after starting treatment.

Your results depend on several factors, including the cause of your hair loss, how early treatment begins, and how consistently you attend sessions and follow my advice regarding medications, nutritional deficiencies, diet, and stress management.

To maximize your results, I encourage patients to attend every scheduled session, take prescribed medications regularly, correct iron or vitamin D deficiencies, eat a protein-rich diet, and avoid smoking.

Mild redness, tenderness, or slight bruising around the injection sites is normal and usually settles within a day or two.

For more than 25 years, I've focused on identifying the underlying cause of hair loss rather than simply treating the symptoms. As a qualified dermatologist, I believe every patient deserves an accurate diagnosis before beginning treatment.

Rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach, I recommend either PRP or GFC based on your scalp examination, medical history, and blood investigations. At my clinic in Kandivali East, Mumbai, my focus is always on providing honest advice and realistic expectations so you can make an informed decision about your hair loss treatment.

FREQUENTLY ASKES QUESTIONS

Does PRP hair treatment actually work for hair loss?

In my experience and according to several clinical studies, PRP can improve hair density, hair thickness and reduce shedding in patients with androgenetic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern hair loss, especially when treatment begins early.

Results vary because there is no single universal PRP protocol. Platelet concentration, injection technique and patient selection all influence the outcome, which is why I tailor every treatment plan individually.

PRP vs GFC: Which should I choose?

Both treatments use your own blood and are considered safe.

GFC uses a specialized kit to produce a more standardized and purified concentration of growth factors and is often slightly more comfortable during injections.

The right choice depends on your scalp assessment and hair loss pattern rather than one treatment being universally better than the other.

Is PRP treatment painful?

I apply a numbing spray before treatment, so most patients experience only mild discomfort, similar to small pinpricks.

A typical session takes around 30 to 45 minutes, and any tenderness or redness usually settles within a day or two.

Can PRP regrow hair in completely bald areas?

No.

PRP and GFC strengthen hair follicles that are still alive but weakened. They cannot create new follicles or regrow hair where the follicles have already disappeared.

For advanced baldness, I usually discuss hair transplantation or other suitable treatment options.

Does PRP work for male pattern baldness and female hair loss?

Yes.

I recommend PRP and GFC for both male and female pattern hair loss, particularly in the early to moderate stages.

For female patients, I also evaluate conditions such as PCOS/PMOS, thyroid disorders, and iron deficiency because treating the underlying cause alongside PRP usually produces better and longer-lasting results.

What is the cost of PRP or GFC hair treatment in Mumbai?

The cost depends on the treatment recommended, the number of sessions required, and your specific hair loss pattern. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
